The Bridges of Venice
History of Venice of America

The Venice Canals are a unique tourist attraction. The canals are located just off 25th Street in Venice Beach, and you could easily walk by them without knowing they are there. It is a neighborhood of houses bordering four man-made wetland canals, each about a quarter-mile long. Along these canals there are sidewalks and bridges that you can walk along to enjoy the eclectic residential architecture and its integration with nature.

Venice of America was built in 1905 by developer Abbot Kinney who sought to recreate the feel of Venice, Italy. Another set of canals were built south of the Venice Canals, which were known as the New Amsterdam Canals by investors and architects. The lit canals with gondoliers and arched bridges drew widespread publicity and helped sell lots in the development.

Unfortunately, the canals didn't have an adequate drainage system. By the 1920s, with cars quickly gaining popularity, the Venice of America canals were viewed by many as outdated, and as a result the larger group of canals were filled in 1929 to make room for paved roads.

By 1940 the New Amsterdam canals had fallen into disrepair, and the district remained in poor condition for more than 40 years. The canals were finally renovated in 1992. They were drained, and new sidewalks and walls were built. The water enters the canals through sea gates in the Marina Del Rey breakwater, and again in Washington Boulevard. They open at low tide to drain most of the water, and at high tide they are closed, trapping the water for about three days, before being refreshed again.

The canals re-opened in 1993, and have become a desirable and expensive residential section of the city.
The residential district surrounding was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. In recent years, there has been extensive renovation work on many of the old houses, and many large, modern houses have been built.
